Career planning for doctors, published by Oxford University Press in September 2025, is already selling well, being in UK Amazon’s top 100 medicine & nursing books in November 2025.

We wrote Career Planning for Doctors for medical students, doctors and those involved in supporting these groups.

We take the view that doctors already have fine-tuned analytic skills, which they use daily for clinical decision-making. Our book shows you how these skills can be adapted to help you with career decision-making.

The book takes readers through a set of simple exercises to help build awareness of one’s own career preferences.  We then guide readers through the process of exploring options that might suit them, based on their individual career preferences. We also cover many of the career challenges facing medical professionals including specialty selection, burnout, and the challenge of balancing work with your personal life.

Throughout the book, case studies bring the theory of career planning to life.  We have included specific chapters on mental health, wellbeing and resilience, working abroad and on being an International Medical Graduate. There’s also a chapter for doctors who are considering leaving the profession – a sensitive issue that is often overlooked.

Career planning for doctors is available in paper and electronic formats from all good bookshops – or you can ask your library to get it.
